In this featured article, Rich Deem explains why deism ultimately fails to answer a number of the "big questions" of our existence.

I have a question about this statement:
"Under deism, the purpose of the universe is elusive at best, and downright cruel at worst. In contrast, theism posits that evil is necessary so that human beings can make a choice between good and evil. In contrast to deism, where God abandons humans, theism says that God promises to be with us in our trials to guide and shape us to respond as He would so that we can become conformed to His image."

Theism says that evil is necessary?? Why necessary?

In Momma summary terms:
Evil exists because of sin and sinful nature right?
not because God is this "being" that created evil to make us suffer as Desim would say.. Am I getting it??
I feel like I am back in Theology class again ugh!!

Hello K-Tribe,

I believe a better way of putting it would be "the possibility of evil is necessary." In other words, God allowed the possibility of evil[free will], but man makes evil actual.

You are correct in pointing out that God did not create evil.

Does that answer your question?

I think I got it... but are you saying Free Will is evil or Free Will can choose to sin , (be evil) against God and the only way to truly resist evil is through Christ. Yes??
What about all the other "isms"? Is Rich saying that Theism is the best way to describe existence?

K-tribe,

Your questions are fine. Since God created mankind with free will, evil, logically, had to be an option. For meaningful interaction to happen at all, free will must exist. After all, love can only exist when it is freely given. Forced love is a contradiction.

I do believe that Mr. Deem is saying that Christianity best explains the reality in which we find ourselves. I believe the same to be true.

Finally, I would agree that Christ is able to provide us with the power to resist temptation (i.e. evil) when we submit to Him. But I will even go a step further and state that Christainity is the only worldview that directly deals with and ultimately defeats evil through Jesus death on the cross!

Great points and questions!
