In this featured debate Dr. David Wood presents the "Islamic Dilemma" to Muslim apologist Daniel Haqiqatjou. For those unfamiliar with this argument, here is just one way to present it:1
For those looking for specific examples, please see Surah 3:3, 5:46 and 5:68 that speak favorably of the Torah and the Gospel.
2. The Qur’an also claims that Muhammad’s message is consistent with these earlier revelations.
2. The Qur’an also claims that Muhammad’s message is consistent with these earlier revelations.
See Surah 2:136 and 29:46
3. However, the Torah and the Gospel contradict the Qur’an on key points.
3. However, the Torah and the Gospel contradict the Qur’an on key points.
These key points include the identity and nature of Jesus, the crucifixion of Jesus and the way of salvation, among others.
4. This creates the “dilemma” for Muslims:
If the Torah and Gospel are reliable (as the Qur’an says), then Islam is false because they contradict the Qur’an.
If the Torah and Gospel are corrupted (as many Muslims today claim), then Islam is false because the Qur’an says they are trustworthy revelations from Allah.
And therein lies the dilemma - either way, Islam is false.
After the debate, Michael Jones of Inspiring Philosophy hosted a post-debate debrief of sorts in which Dr. Wood, Jones and others discussed why Haqiqatjou failed to solve the dilemma. I found this discussion profitable (and entertaining) for various reasons, but of most interest was their explanation of the how the Islamic Dilemma is growing. After listening to them, I concluded that this is an argument that the committed Christian apologists should strive to master. You can find that video here.
Finally, for those new to the Islamic Dilemma, this video provides a clear and easy to understand introduction.
Courage and Godspeed,
Chad
Footnote:
1. As Dr. Wood notes in the debate, there are various ways to formulate the argument. Here, I am attempting to structure it in such way that it is easy to understand for those new to the dilemma.
