Paul's Life as a Living Rebuttal

It was the Apostle Paul who wrote:

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life”
(1 Timothy 1:15–16, NLT).

Notice that Paul doesn’t say he used to be the worst of sinners. He says he is. And yet, he experienced God’s mercy.

Here we see both the scandal and the beauty of the gospel.

Jesus didn’t come for the cleaned-up, the morally impressive, or those who “mostly get it right.” He came to save sinners—real ones, with real guilt, real regret, and real failure. He made this clear when He said, “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners” (Mark 2:17, NLT).

Are you haunted by your past?
Do you think you’ve crossed a line that is beyond God’s forgiveness?
Do you fear that you have out-sinned the grace of God?

Paul’s life stands as a living rebuttal.

God didn’t minimize Paul’s sin, but through forgiving it, put His patience and mercy on display. No matter how broken you think you are, God can do the same in your life.

Forgiveness is not earned by minimizing your sin. It is received by trusting the Savior who bore it.

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
And that means there is hope—even for you.

If you have read this and know that you need God’s forgiveness, go here to learn how you, too, can experience His mercy and become a new creation.
