In this full-length debate recorded on November 20, 2025 at Sound Faith 2025 in Boston, Bart Ehrman and Michael Licona present their views on the historical evidence surrounding Gospel authorship.
Licona argues that the traditional attributions to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the most probable explanation given the external testimony and internal features of the texts. Ehrman contends that the Gospels were originally anonymous, written decades later by educated Greek authors, and only first attributed to apostles in the late second century."
For those who want to learn more about Ehrman's thesis and some of the responses to it, I would encourage you to check out our series based on the work of Brant Pitre, "Who Wrote the Gospels?" In the series, Pitre contends that the theory of "The Anonymous Gospels" is "completely baseless."
