"...the more we communicate by means of technology, the more distant we become from one another. We cut off many of the elements that make genuine human interaction the wonderful thing that it is - the atmosphere of contact that can be experienced only by people sitting in the same room together. It all becomes depersonalized and reduced by preferring texting over talking, or using Alexa, Siri, and VR over conversing face-to-face. We end up communicating only fragments of who we are and what we wish to say. It is obvious, isn't it, that the more technology we place between ourselves, the more remote we become from one another and less aware of how we may be affecting, even damaging, one another. Think of online hate speech and what goes on in chatrooms in the metaverse.
It would seem that digital interaction can easily suppress fundamental virtues such as love, kindness, sympathy, and goodness. It can stunt character and frustrate the growth of the fruit of the Spirit in a Christian's life. And all of that in the name of progress! It is easy to think that technology is shaped by us, when all the time it is squeezing us into its mold and conforming us to this world's thinking.
We need to wake up from our tech dream and listen to the admonition of Paul: 'I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.'"1
Courage and Godspeed,
